IMPORTANT - APPLIES TO ALL TRIATHLONS AND DUATHLONS - Non-USA Triathlon Annual Members must pay an additional $10.00 one-day USAT insurance fee for each event you do in 2010! Please be sure to select the appropriate entry when you register online. If you register by mail, please include the additional $10 with your mail-in applications. SWIM COURSE DESCRIPTION - All athletes will start on the Pier, located at the Yacht Club and will “dive-in” to start the race. Athlete waves will be limited to 75 per wave. Athletes will complete a rectangular shaped swim course with buoys on their left. Athletes will exit at the boat ramps located at the Yacht Club.
TRANSITION - Transition will be located on the paved parking lot located at the Yacht Club.
BIKE COURSE DESCRIPTION - (see map) Athletes can expect a rolling hills course on sparsely populated roads throughout Shawnee County. All turns and hazards will be well marked throughout the course. No Aid Stations will be present, so athletes will need to carry enough to make it through their respective courses. The Long Course and Short Course are both one-loop courses.
TRANSITION - Athletes will return to the Yacht Club Transition area.
RUN COURSE - (see map) Long Course athletes can expect a flat course with the occasional mild incline. The entire run course is on a closed running trail with lake views. Each turn will be well-marked and there will be two aid stations with an assortment of nutritional products. Short Course athletes and duathletes will be running on an out-and-back course. Athletes will run half of the 3.1 miles and then turn back around at the turnaround point and run the other half back to where they began.
FINISH LINE - Athletes will finish close to Transition on the running trail. Iin true TINMAN spirit, all athletes will finish on a Yellow Brick Road Finish carpet!
VENUE - Lake Shawnee is a truly wondrous lake located in Topeka, KS, and is operated by Shawnee County Parks and Recreation. Lake Shawnee has hosted the Topeka TINMAN for 29 glorious years and even has a street located at the lake, appropriately named Tinman Lane.
Course maps are now available! See the Course Maps Section for complete course information.
PLEASE - Know the Course! It will be manned by volunteers and law enforcement, but is still your responsibility to know where you are going and to keep yourself safe. Please stay aware of traffic and obey traffic laws – you will be able to roll through intersections that are controlled by volunteers and police, but please still pay attention as we do not have control over motorists that do not listen to our directions. Do not pass the centerline of the road any time for any reason! If you have time to drive the course before Saturday morning, do so – it will make you feel more confident about knowing where to go during the bike.
NEW FOR 2010 - We will add a custom Gold, Silver and Bronze Ultramax Championship Series medal to the neck of each of our custom wine awards.

Please follow these simple instructions carefully. Not wearing the transponder properly may prevent you from being timed. Transponders are non-transferable! Be careful not to switch with other participants. The chip must be on your ankle at all times or you will not be scored in the event. Your timing chip will be removed by volunteers once you reach the finish line. If you find you still have your timing chip after the race, please put it in a padded envelope and mail to: Ultramax Events 2902 Forum Blvd Suite 101 Columbia, MO 65203. YOU WILL BE CHARGED A $125 REPLACEMENT FEE IF YOU DO NOT RETURN YOUR TIMING TRANSPONDER. Failure to return a chip will result in disqualification from all future events owned or timed by Ultramax Events!
TEAMS - Teams will transfer their timing chip in the transition area. The last member of the team should wear the race number on the run leg. We recommend using a race belt for easy transfer. The timing chip must be on the ankle of each team member at all times while racing. Team entry is only available for the International Distance. Teams will not count towards Club Championship scoring.
USA TRIATHLON SANCTIONING - You must bring a valid photo ID and your current USA Triathlon card to pick up your packet. To download a copy of your USAT card go to www.usatriathlon.org. One-day insurance is available at registration if you have not purchased it in your application. You cannot race without your yearly membership card or a one-day license. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RACE WITHOUT A VALID PHOTO ID.
IDENTIFICATION - A wristband will be affixed to your wrist at check-in. This band will identify you as an official entrant and must be worn during the entire event. The wristband allows you access to the transition area and post–race food and beverages. You will not be allowed to remove your bicycle and gear from the transition area following the race without your wristband affixed to your wrist. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE YOUR WRISTBAND UNTIL AFTER THE AWARDS CELEBRATIONS!
BODY MARKING - Body marking will take place on race day. You will not be permitted in the transition area on race day without your wristband and your body marked. Do not apply body lotion or sunscreen until after you have been body marked. Be sure that the volunteer who marks you does so using your race number. Bring your race number with you.
RACE RESULTS - Unofficial race results will be posted prior to the awards presentation. Please review the results and report any discrepancy to a race official PRIOR to the start of the awards presentation. Results will be considered official after the awards ceremony. Athletes who do not wear the timing chip or lose the chip during the event will not be scored. Please note that the clock at the finish line reflects the start time of the first wave. Race results will be posted online (www.ultramaxtri.com) on race day.
USAT Athlete Excess Medical Policy:
The athlete excess medical coverage protects each participant for the day of the event at USAT sanctioned races, camps and clinics. When athletes purchase a USAT annual license or one day permit, a portion of those fees cover the cost to provide them with excess medical insurance. This coverage only extends to their participation in an USA Triathlon sanctioned event and is only available after the injured party has filed with any primary insurance policies. A deductible does apply for this excess coverage.
If an athlete is injured while participating in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event the following steps must be followed:
• Athletes must file with their primary healthcare provider (i.e. United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, traveler’s insurance, etc.).
• Athlete completes a medical claim form. For serious incidents or for athletes requesting coverage, either the race
director or USAT can provide them with a medical claim form. The medical claim form along with all explanation of benefit documents should be sent directly from the athlete to the insurance company as indicated on the claim form. Please email sanction@usatriathlon.org for a copy of the form.
• Athletes will pay a deductible. All claimants will pay anywhere from $250.00 (two-hundred and fifty U.S. dollars) to $1,000.00 (one thousand U.S. dollars) out of pocket and possibly more for uncovered expenses.
Be advised that coverage may not apply to each and every claim. Additionally, coverage only extends to participants that have purchased an USA Triathlon annual license or one-day permit and were injured through participation in an USA Triathlon sanctioned event. Please email questions to: sanction@usatriathlon.org
USA TRIATHLON (USAT) competition rules will apply. These rules are
found in the Triathlon Competition guidebook (usatriathlon.com).
Please Note: Per USAT rules all athletes must present a photo ID at registration. NO ONE will be permitted to race without a photo ID. Also, YOU must pick up your own packet - you cannot have someone pick up your packet for you.
USAT’s “Age Up” Policy:
An athlete's age for any USAT sanctioned race will be his/her age as of Dec. 31, 2010 . The age he/she is on 12/31 will determine his/her racing age group. If an athlete is due to "age-up" into the next group, it will happen at the beginning of the year, not after the athlete's birthday. This action aligns regular U.S. age group racing with the method used by USA Triathlon for its National Rankings Program and its new Grand Prix Series.
Example: John Smith is 39 and will turn 40 on November 20, 2010.
John will be considered 40 for all 2010 races – and will race in the 40-44 age group at all 2010 races.
This same policy applies to the all race categories in Ultramax races (Open, Clydesdale, etc).
HELMETS - Each athlete is required to wear an approved helmet during the bike segment. You must have your helmet securely fastened on your head before you mount and dismount your bike. Drafting and blocking (impeding the progress of passing cyclists) are not permitted during the race. USAT officials will monitor the bike course and strictly enforce these rules.

Ultramax is working to improve our green footprint. We plan to introduce a new concept in 2010. Instead of giving out thousands of plastic bags and tons of paper flyers and etc., we are going to move towards a new concept that we are calling the Nation Digi-Packet. We will be asking our event partners to extend some amazing digital offers to YOU. Before each race, we will send our registrants a link to view the Digi-Packet online. Athletes will then choose to print or use the online offers they want. The end goal is to reduce the impact on our planet. If you work for a company that would like to offer a product or service through this creative new concept contact Kaela Rorvig at info@ultramaxtri.com. |
