Equipment

Bikes - It is appropriate to use any kind of bike at MaxTrax. It is easier to ride a road bike, hybrid bike or tri bike, as they have more gears (better for the few hills you'll encounter on the course). However, many people will ride mountain bikes, or other bikes they already have in their garage (or find in the family's/friends' garage!), and this is perfectly OK.
If you want to purchase a bike for this event, you can usually get a decent "starter" bike for about $600-$800. If you are not sure how active you plan to be, as far as multi-sport racing, this is the best way to go. Your local bike shop (Cycle Extreme, in Columbia, sponsors this race) will know what is best for you. If you do buy a bike, make sure to have it a couple of weeks before the event, so you can practice riding it.
Clothes - Historically, the weather at MaxTrax calls for layers as it is normally cool in the morning (but you will heat up as you get into the race). If you want to wear different clothes for the different legs of the event, you do need to have a base layer that can be worn the entire time, as there is no covered place to change clothes. As much as we all hate to be seen in public in spandex, it is the safest and most comfortable opiont for biking (looser pants can get caught in your gears). You can get more specific info on clothing on the Training Page.
